October - On October 1st, Applied hosted a symposium, "Reducing SSI: What Can You Do Differently Tomorrow?" Over 70 attendees gathered before the opening ceremony of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress to learn more about evidence-based practices to reduce SSI, such as care bundles, teamwork and wound protection. This symposium has provided a great educational forum for ACS to bring to light the hot topic of SSI, and more importantly, effective implementations to protect their patients.  May - Applied Medical introduces the latest addition to the Inzii retrieval system product line. The Inzii 12/15mm retrieval system features a 1600ml bag designed for use through Kii 12mm or larger ports, providing utmost versatility and maximizing introduction port options. Similar to the other Inzii retrieval systems, this new addition also features the GuideBead to allow reopening and closure of the bag, facilitating multiple specimen retrieval.

 March - Applied Medical's GelPOINT System was featured in a Pittsburgh Post Gazette article documenting one patient's unique experience with single site kidney removal. According to the newspaper, the procedure was among the first of its kind in the Pittsburgh region. In the article, Benjamin Davies, MD, outlined some of the potential benefits of the novel single site technique, such as shorter recovery time and less pain.

 January - Applied Medical presents the Total 5mm Solution, the first complete 5mm approach to minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery using all 5mm trocars and instruments including the Inzii universal retrieval system, the Kii balloon blunt tip system, and the Epix universal clip applier. This comprehensive suite of enabling technologies allows surgeons to perform many laparoscopic surgeries through a 5mm approach.

 December - Applied Medical has again been highlighted in the Orange County Register's list of Top O.C. Workplaces 2011. Applied was featured in the "Large" company category, which included businesses with more than 1000 employees. To determine the rankings, The Register partnered with the independent firm, Workplace Dynamics, to anonymously survey thousands of employees from 119 companies across Orange County about workplace experience and company leadership. This is the 2nd time Applied has made the list as part of the top 10 large companies in the county.

VIDEO FEATURE: Dr. Justin A. Maykel Performs Single Incision Colectomy at UMass Memorial Medical Center
 November - Applied Medical's GelPOINT System was highlighted in a UMass Memorial Hospital video about single incision colon removal. In the video, Justin Maykel, MD, Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at UMass, explained a few of the potential advantages of single site colectomy: "Our goal is to basically minimize length of the incision and the number of the incisions. In doing so we hope that this actually translates into less pain for the patient, a faster recovery, [and] less wound related complications.."

PRODUCT LAUNCH: GelPOINT Path Transanal Access Platform
 Rancho Santa Margarita, CA - October 20, 2011 - Applied Medical announced today the full market release of GelPOINT path transanal access platform. The GelPOINT path enables insufflated access through the anus and into the rectum and lower sigmoid colon for surgical procedures, such as Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS), flap revision and fistula repair.

 September - Applied Medical introduces the Alexis laparoscopic system, which enables a laparoscopic approach before and after specimen retrieval. The Alexis laparoscopic system consists of the Alexis O wound protector/retractor, which provides 360° of circumferential protection and retraction, a laparoscopic cap which maintains pneumoperitoneum, and a 12x100mm Kii Fios first entry that can be used as the first stick to insufflate with only 3mm penetration into the peritoneum.

CLINICAL STUDY HIGHLIGHT: Alexis Wound Protector/Retractor
August - Applied Medical's Alexis wound protector/retractor appears in a study in Liver Transplantation, which found that "[t]he use of a wound protector significantly reduced wound complications." In a multivariate analysis of potential risk factors for wound infections in living donor partial hepatectomy, "only the use of a wound protector was found to significantly reduce the risk of wound infections in an adjusted analysis."Ref

FACILITY EXPANSION: Applied Medical Adds Technology And Development Facility
 July - Applied Medical announces the opening of a 52,000 square foot manufacturing and research facility. When fully operational, the multi-functional space will fulfill Applied's rapidly expanding research and operational requirements. This building brings the total square footage of Applied's Southern California headquarters to over 686,000 SF. Applied's latest facility addition reflects the company's sustained growth as it continues to satisfy its customers' need for breakthrough technologies at a superior economic value.  July - Applied Medical's GelPOINT System was featured in a WJXT Jacksonville newscast about single incision gastric bypass. Dr. Sunil K. Sharma, Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at the University of Florida, performed this weight loss surgery through a single, small 3 cm incision in the patient's abdomen. This particular patient went home the day after surgery and returned to work the following week.

In a study assessing how surgeons adopting this new approach performed laparoscopic tasks with various single incision devices, "the GelPOINT system appears to be the easiest system for novices to use and performed very similar to conventional laparoscopy."Ref By potentially reducing the learning curve for single incision surgery, the GelPOINT system can expedite the implementation of this exciting new method, allowing more surgeons to offer enhanced cosmetic results and other potential benefits to their patients.
